One of the various activities available to our guests is the gorgeous Devil’s Bridge hike, at a gorge near Ancient Troizina. The Devil’s Bridge hike offers an almost surreal landscape with small natural waterfalls and fresh water pools. In the summertime, a swim in the crystal clear pool waters can be the most refreshing experience after a hike under the hot sun.
One can experience the main parts of the gorge within about an hour, but there are several hiking trails (some of them pretty technical) if you would like to explore further. The hikes are easy for beginners with few parts that require more than basic fitness.
Where does it begin?
The Devil’s Bridge hike begins at Thesseus’ Rock. Legend has it that king Aegeas (the one after which the Aegean Sea was named) left his armour under that rock for his son Thesseus to pick up when he was strong enough to lift the rock.
A brief stroll later one arrives at the Devil’s Bridge (Diavologefyro, in Greek). The Devil’s Bridge is a natural, bridge-like passage carved on the rocks by the water running through the gorge underneath. The bridge itself is quite unimpressive if one fails to realise the height at which the land stands above the gorge.
Hiking trails
From the Devil’s Bridge there are two small hiking trails one can follow. One of them takes you down to the gorge, leading to the Brige. The accessibility of this hike depends on the volume of water coming down from the mountains. Most often the path is accessible (especially in summer) but one should be prepared for climbing over a few gigantic boulders scattered all over the passage.
The view from underneath the Devil’s Bridge however is more than rewarding. One can marvel at the grace of nature and the way that a tiny natural bridge was created by the water flow over the centuries.
The second hiking trail heads to the natural, fresh water pools created downstream by the running water. The water is incredibly clear most of the year and the swim in the pools is most rewarding during the hot Greek summer.
From there onwards, one can follow a lengthy (about 30 kilometer) and rather technical hike (includes ascending to an elevation of about 600 meters) which leads to the bird sanctuary of Psifta. From the top of the mountain range one can rejoice the stunning views towards the canal of Poros as well as the rocky island of Hydra. We highly recommend using a guide for this hike.
All in all, the ride to Troizina and the Devil’s Bridge hike make for a wonderful activity, where you can experience authentic Greece away from the summer beach crowds. Have a look for yourselves!
