“I was born in Poros as one of very few children as at the time there was a very small hospital on the island. So I’m proud to say I am of Poros origin! After I finished high school I decided to move to Athens to study. I spent there about 7 years. During this time I met Vangelis, my future husband. When we got married, we decided to go back to Poros and start our life there, together.
My best childhood memory is summer time when we were playing in the sea, collecting shells and other treasures. I also loved spending time in the local groves and forests, it was the best place to hide from the heat of the sun. We used to climb the trees and play for many hours. I also remember that together with my friends we always used to make things by hand. I guess that is when my passion for crafting started. I was doing a lot of embroidery and knitting for my dolls and for myself. Weaving came a bit later as at that time there was no tradition of weaving on the island.
When I was still at the university in Athens, I don’t know why I decided I really wanted to learn how to weave. At the time there was no special school to learn it so I started looking for a teacher. I was lucky to find two teachers that turned out to be very important to me. The one taught me natural dying and frame weaving, the other taught me weaving on a loom. Both of them were very inspiring and supported me. From the first time I started weaving I knew I would like to do it as my job. The workshop on Poros was actually Vangelis’ idea and his surprise for my graduation from the university. He collected money from family and friends so we could buy the first loom, the very same one you see me working on right now. That is when we decided to open a workshop.
My biggest passion in life? Creating things.”
Wonderful!! Brava Eleni – she and Vangelis were some of the first people I met on Poros, and knowing them contributes to my love of the island. Eleni’s wonderful creations on the loom have also enhanced my own home environment and that of many of my friends who visit Poros from the US. Excellent interview, Magdalena!
Thank you Pamela 🙂 Indeed, Eleni and Vangelis are very special people and Poros wouldn’t be the same without them!
