1. The Ancient Theatre of Epidavros (Epidaurus)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 (part of the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus), the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros combines unparalleled acoustics in a cultural space that is operational 2.500 years after it was built. Do not miss the opportunity to see a play at the summer festival, it is a lifetime experience.

2. The city of Nafplion

Many people are not aware that Nafplion was the capital of modern Greece before it was moved to Athens in 1834. In addition to its history, Nafplion is home to one of the most beautiful old towns in the country, as well as to the impressive Venetian castles of Palamidi and Bourtzi. Stroll the small streets, browse the craft stores, grab an artesanal ice cream and enjoy the flair of Italian finesse in the country right next to it!

3. Mycenae

A second UNESCO World Heritage site in our vicinity, the archaeological site of Mycenae and Tiryns boasts impressive ruins that are 1.000 years older than the ones in Athens. Made famous by Brad Pitt and co ( ! ) , the grandiose entrance and tombs are a prime illustration of the cultural and architectural exchanges between the ancient Greeks and the Egyptians.

4. The wine making region of Nemea

Even though Nemea may not share the historical monuments of the previous sights, it can boast 3.500 years of winemaking history. If you are into old world wines, Nemea is as old world as it gets! In addition to the wine routes and the wine tasting, Nemea is a pleasant village worth discovering. Our suggestion: go to Nemea with a bicycle on the rack and explore on wheels. Just take it easy with the tasting, ok? 🙂

5. Elafonissos

Greece is not all about history: the beaches are lovely, the weather pleasant and the nature versatile. The tiny island of Elafonissos is an undiscovered piece of heaven in one of the southernmost tips of the European Continent. Simos beach in particular has made it to more postcard photos than you can imagine, often not only about Greece!

6. Monemvasia

Fall in love and travel back in time at the perfectly preserved medieval town of Monemvasia. Frequently referred to as the Gibraltar of Greece, the ‘rock’ is host to numerous stylish bars and traditional restaurants. Watching the moonrise from one of the cobblestoned terraces, smelling the jasmine and lavender in the pots, can give you goosebumps for the rest of your life. Given that half my family comes from the area, this is a (biased) personal favourite.

7. Kardamyli

Mani used to be one of Greece’s poorest and less desirable areas. Arid, rocky and rough, it is naturally separated from the fertile nearby regions of Kalamata and Sparta. Having said that, the remoteness and lack of mass tourism protected Mani and left gems like Kardamyli. Savoured especially by German and French connoisseurs of travel, Kardamyli offers a stunning stone-built town, beaches and fertile olive land. Don’t miss it!

8. Olympia

If you have heard of the Olympic Games, you have heard of Olympia. If you have not heard of the Olympic Games you are probably too young to even read this post, so I will carry on. Experience the site where it all started, where the spirit of athleticism and noble competition came to life.

9. Kalavryta and Diakofto

Swimming, hiking and skiing, all in one place. Add to that history, architecture, great food and one of Greece’s oldest railway lines and you have an amazing experience packed in a few square kilometres. Taking the cog-railway up to Kalavryta and hiking back down is one of my most favourites hikes in nature (also because it is all downhill!).

Yes, of course we are biased! But we genuinely believe that our neighbourhood is a gem to be discovered. Come, relax and enjoy the view, the beaches and the hikes.
